History
- Founded in 1783 as Katerynoslav
- Remained a small community until industrialization in early 1880s
- 1926 the Soviets renamed it Dnipropetrovsk
- During WWII was a main center of anti-German resistance, destruction inflicted to the city
- Dnipropetrovsk became part of independent Ukraine during Ukraine’s independence in 1991
- Name was shortened to Dnipro in 2016 after Ukraine started a process of “decommunization”
Culture
- Home of world’s largest Jewish cultural and community center, the Menorah.
- 15 higher educational institutions, 9 theaters, and 37 museums

Celebrities born in Dnipro:
- Yulia Tymoshenko: 10th and 13th Prime Minister of Ukraine. First lady prime minister in 2005, and was on Forbes’s list of the world’s most powerful women
- Oksana Serhiyivna Baiul-Farina: retired figure skater. 1993 World champion and the 1994 Olympic champion in ladies’ singles
- Olena Kharchenko: Author. Co-published “The Story of Ukraine” children’s book
Architecture:
- Most 19th century the classical style of architecture was replaced with modern eclectic style
- Three land fortresses located near the city, including Polish fortress Kodak
